Structure & Regulation

What is an Alternative Business Structure?

An Alternative Business Structure (ABS) is a form of legal practice permitted under the Legal Services Act 2007 that allows non-lawyers to have ownership or management roles in a law firm. ABS authorisation is granted by an approved regulator — in KCLF's case, the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

Why an ABS structure?

The ABS model enables KCLF to integrate legal and financial expertise within a single regulated entity. This eliminates the structural separation that typically requires clients to engage separate legal and financial advisers, and allows for a genuinely unified service offering.

What is the SRA?

The Solicitors Regulation Authority is the independent regulatory body for solicitors and law firms in England and Wales. It operates separately from the Law Society and is responsible for setting and enforcing standards of professional conduct.

What can KCLF do now?

Prior to SRA authorisation, Knowledge Capital provides advisory, structuring, and financial services that do not constitute reserved legal activities. KCLF does not provide legal advice, draft legal documents, or conduct litigation in its current formation stage.
